Taking my Ass to Santiago!

Lately, my life has been hijacked by a contracted position. I am learning new things and the learning curve leaves me more exhausted than I am when I walk up a mountain.

In my experience, physical labor almost always seems easier to navigate than administrative labors. (And I survived Basic Training AND worked out on the flightline in frigid Upper Michigan for years, so I know physical!)

In my rare free moments, I am reading a delightful tale about travelling to Santiago, by donkey. If that sounds pastoral and proseic, you do not know much about livestock, especially donkeys! Tim Moore, the author, writes in the style of Bill Bryson and manages to bring alive his challenging (and humorous) adventures with Shinto, the donkey in question. The book is titled: Travels with My Donkey; One Man and his Ass on a Pilgrimage to Santiago. (Hence the title of this post - I am taking no one with me, just my own sweet...well, uh, I think you can see where this is going!).

I met one person travelling with an ass - on a wet wet day just past Cahors on the Le Puy route. The animal had not liked the rain at all and had been very difficult to 'pull' along the route in the rain apparently. Much easier just to walk it with a backpack!!!- if not quite so adventurous.

No,I have no plans to be a donkey-drover - not my idea of fun! I look forward to some solitude on my walk.
